Against “FLOATING PRISON”: Today it is them – Tomorrow it could be you – so ACT NOW

At least 10,000 emails to IMO before 15th November, 2020

Seafarers Union of Russia calls to support National Union of Seafarers of India and Indian seafarers onboard Indian flag vessel  Jag Anand (IMO no. 9463308) carrying coal from Australia to Jingtang in North China . The vessel arrived Jingatang on 13th June, 2020 is still at anchorage waiting for her turn to berth for last 5 months which is yet remains uncertain.

There are 23 seafarers on board.  15 seafarers have completed 16 months of continuous service on board while remaining 8 have completed 13 months of service on board.  A few (out of 15 mentioned) have completed nearly 20 months of service on board.  There are many other vessels waiting at anchorage for months due to Chinese politics.

The National Union of Seafarers of India (NUSI) alongwith MUI has taken up the matter at national and international level of the ITF, IMO, ILO: " Despite the best of the efforts of the company, DG Shipping, Indian Embassy in China, Government of India, the crew change is not being allowed by Chinese authorities.  In the politics between Australia and China, our Indian seafarers and their families are suffering. We have at hand a humanitarian crisis on board where the entire crew is fatigued & requires urgent relief".

All seafarers on board are in need of urgent relief and are mentally and physically exhausted due to unprecedented prolonged stay on board.  The families of Jag Anand seafarers are being supported by NUSI Sahara 1800-102-5110” counselling helpline.  Efforts to take the ship to another country or any other Chinese port is also being resisted by the Chinese with arrest of the ship and seafarers onboard.

Today it is them, tomorrow it could be you.  It is our duty and their right over us to assist them to come home.  All you need to do is to spare 5 minutes of your time and immediately send an email (as per format) to the IMO with a copy to Chinese authorities and a copy to NUSI.  We need to send atleast 10,000 emails before 15th November, 2020.  Send this email from wherever you are – at home, on board – in transit.  We want all Indian seafarers at Chinese anchorage to come home to celebrate Diwali with their family like all of us.
