The SUR helped a family bereaved of a breadwinner get £5,000

In early February, the daughter of the former ship cook of the fishing vessel "Amur" applied to SUR Primary Organization of Vladivostok. The girl, a student of the Maritime State University named after Admiral G. I. Nevelskoy, and her mother not only lost the father and the husband, but were also left without means of support, bereaved of their only breadwinner. 

The seafarer, like the entire crew of the fishing vessel “Amur”, fell ill during the voyage. Then, on December 23 last year, he was signed off the vessel and  sent home to Sakhalin for treatment with a positive test for coronavirus. On January 12, he died of COVID-19 in a hospital in Kholmsk. His daughter had being studied on commercial base at the Maritime State University named after Admiral G. I. Nevelskoy,  and, having lost her father she had to support her unemployed  mother and pay for her education on her own.

They had nobody to ask for help.  The SUR Primary Organization Committee examined the documents received and decided to prepare an application to the ITF Seafarers' Trust for a grant. 

The ITF Seafarers' Trust was founded back in 1981 and committed to drive improvement of moral, mental and physical wellbeing of seafarers, regardless of nationality, race or religion. Since then it has provided about  $200 million to support the wellbeing of maritime  workers and their families around the world. The  ITF Seafarers' Trust implements various projects to assist  seafarers, and one of them is aimed at supporting workers and their families who find themselves in a difficult situation during the pandemic. The minimum grant provided in this case is £250 and the maximum is £5,000.

“Since the beginning of the pandemic, this was already our fourth application for assistance to seafarers and their families who find themselves in a difficult  situation due to the spread of COVID-19,” -  Petr Osichansky, Chairman of the  SUR Primary Organization of Vladivostok said. – Like in previous cases, the Seafarers’ Trust Emergency Fund (STEF) didn’t keep aloof from the fate of the Russian seafarer’s family and approved them a £5,000  grant.  

On March 14 the daughter of the deceased seafarer  received bank confirmation of crediting this amount to her account. She will use the money to pay for her education.

The girl sincerely thanked the  SUR Primary Organization of Vladivostok and the ITF Seafarers’ Trust: “Thank you very much for your help! I never thought of such support, I never  expected  it was really possible!”
