The mother of a crew member of the M/V Millenial Spirit thanked the SUR

The Press Service of the Seafarers’ Union of Russia (SUR)  has a letter of thanks sent by the mother of a  crew member of the m/v Millenial Spirit to the SUR. In this letter  she expresses her sincere gratitude to the SUR for the efforts made by the union to repatriate seafarers.

Recall that on February 24, 2022, the  Moldovan ship Millenial Spirit came under rocket fire  12 nautical miles from the port of Yuzhny. All 10 Russians crew members jumped into the sea and spent about 40 minutes in cold water until help arrived. The seafarers suffered  burns of various degrees and were taken to the hospital. Unfortunately, on March 8, the captain of the ship died from his wound. The rest  crew were moved to the church in Chernomorsk after treatment.

All this time the SUR was being in constant contact with both the crew members and some of their relatives. In addition, the SUR appealed to the Ministry of Transport of the Russian Federation, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, the International Transport Workers Federation, the International Labor Organization and the International Maritime Organization with a request to coordinate efforts to speed up  repatriation of the crew members of the m/v Millenial Spirit.

One month later, on March 24, it became known that the seafarers  returned to Moscow  via Moldova. From there they headed  home:  the Union covered the repatriation costs of all nine seafarers, the SUR members.

In her letter to the SUR the seafarer’ mother wrote: “With all my heart I want to thank the organization for the efforts made to return our husbands and sons to the Russian Federation. Thank you for your kind and caring attitude. We really appreciate your work, and we will never forget.”
