“SUR Membership is a logical step in current reality”

Each marine worker can join the Seafarers Union of Russia or renew the Membership Card at the nearest SUR office, like Pavel Vorobyov from St. Petersburg has recently done. He signed off from  the M/V BALTIC HEATHER on December, 18 and, having decided not to put off  joining the Union, he came to the Baltic Territorial Organization’ office.

- Membership in a trade union is a logical step in the current reality, - the 3rd Engineer argued. – It is very important that the seafarers’ rights are advocated at all levels. And only such organization as SUR which is effectively recognized within international trade union movement, should deal with this.

It should be noted that M/V  BALTIC HEATHER, where the seafarer works, is covered by the SUR collective agreement,  approved by the International Transport Workers’ Federation. The shipowner is Ost-West-Handel und Schiffahrt GmbH (Germany).  The  St. Petersburg-based company "Afalina" is engaged in manning of the OWH-owned  refrigerator vessels. Both companies are reliable social partners of the SUR.

The seafarer himself is truly pleased to work with them: “I have been employed through the “Afalina” since 2010,” says Pavel. “Everything is fine, no complaints.”
